I think you have to go back a loooong way for that one.

You had money in the form of gold around for a long time, and you had merchants depositing it and borrowing it. I'll bet you can find representations of it in ancient Greece and Rome, and maybe even further back. Commerce has been flowing across the Mediterranean for a long time.

I suppose it sorta depends on what you mean by "modern banking", and what you include as 'modern'.

the british empire, the british empire spread its banking systems throughout the empire, being so wide spread they were adopted by lots of countries out side the empire although the system has changed a bit since then.
