use the distributive property: a * (x + y) = ax + ay

(x + 5) (x - 7) =
x (x - 7) + 5 (x - 7) =

Note above how we used distributive to break up (x+5). In the next step, we use distributive to eliminate the remaining parentheses. For example, x(x-7) becomes x*x - 7*x, which is x^2 - 7x:

x^2 - 7x + 5x - 35 =

We used distributive twice. Finally we can combine like terms (really using distributive again, though you will skip that step as you become more advanced: -7x + 5x = (-7 + 5)x = -2x):

x^2 - 2x - 35

(x+5)(x-7)
=x(x-7)+5(x-7) by the distributive property
=x^2 - 7x + 5x - 35
=x^2 - 2x - 35

x^2 means x squared.

(x+5)(x-7)
u must use 'foil' and multiply all the variables inside the first parentheses w/ the second
x^2-7x+5x-35
combine like terms
x^2-2x-35

(x+5)(x-7)
x*x=x^2
5*x=5x
-7*x=-7x
5*-7=-35

x^2+5x-7x-35
x^2-2x-35
