Get a hold of a stud finder. Or you could go and buy some wall anchors. They expand as you tighten a screw in them and would be strong enough to hold small speakers.

You are probably hitting a nail from the framing. try moving the screw over a half inch. If that doesn't work and you still hit the hard object, then you are most likely hitting a steel protecting plate. The steel plates are often put in to prevent nails & screws from going into electrical wires that are near the sheetrock. In other words, it is doing its job and saving your life by keeping you from drilling into electrical wiring.

Find a new spot for your speakers.

If you are mounting right next to the ceiling you are most likely hiting a stud. It is difficult to screw in a screw without first drilling a pilot hole. Get a drill bit smaller than the size of the screw and drill it in where the screw would go. Then proceed to screw in the screw where you drilled the pilot hole. It will be much easier and since you are drilling into a stud it should hold tight.

Hopefully you will be hitting a stud. Did you try and screw the screws into the studs. If you can, it will certainly hold the weight of the speakers. If you go into drywall and play the stereo loud, the vibrations could loosen the screws and the speakers could fall on the floor.

If the wall is drywalled you may be hitting a wooden stud. If that's the case good just keep screwing it in. If your hitting concrete then you need to drill a bigger hole and install a plastic drywall plug then put the screw into it

You're most likely hitting the top plate.
This is a 2x4 doubled up running along the top of the wall.
Move down about 4" from the ceiling & use plastic anchors.
Hope this helped, good luck!!
