The Bible tells of angels leaving heaven, materializing physical bodies, and taking Earthly women as wives & having offspring who were called the nephilum, the mighty men of old. Could these have been the source for the stories in mythology. This all happened prior to the flood.

Yes, naturally the Hebrews didn't live in a cultural vacuum.
They knew of the myths of the Egyptians, the Phoenicians and the Babylonians, all of which describe gods mating with women to produce heroes and giants.

I think the Bible story is meant to explain to the Hebrews why the neighbouring countries worshipped such gods and believed in half-god heroes. Naturally the Bible recasts all these foreign divinities as demons or fallen angels, since they believed in just the one God.

I believe the Bible is based on tales carried from more advanced religions and shaped to fit the nomadic Hebrews. There is no proof otherwise, and there is physical proof of the mature religions the Hebrews may have plagiarized. The same is true with the New Testament.

Scala Paradisi -- the Stairway to Heaven -- describes a 4-runged ladder to Heaven, each rung being one of the four steps in method of Bible reading.

lectio (reading): "looking on Holy Scripture with all one's will and wit"

meditatio (meditation): "a studious insearching with the mind to know what was before concealed through desiring proper skill"

oratio (prayer): "a devout desiring of the heart to get what is good and avoid what is evil"

contemplatio (contemplation): "the lifting up of the heart to God tasting somewhat of the heavenly sweetness and savour"

I think they are and it isn't a huge leap to asume so. In more rescent biblical history they adopted beleifs they couldn't conquer and stamp out like the Yule Tree so why wouldn't they have done it in the past as well right.
