True, media overplayed it and some people overreacted.
But the fact of the matter is that in that kind of programme, that very act of Gere was indecent. Had they been shooting in a film things would have been OK. Even more of that would have been acceptable. Propriety demands that you do things in right place and on right occasion. You undress in bed room, it is OK but to do the same thing on stage or or on street would be punishable.
Gill was punished for overstepping the bonds of decency.

I agree that the precious time of the court of law is being wasted in trivial things like this. But then no body would have bothered if such a thing had happened inside the four walls of a room between two concenting people. It happened on a stage in public view, where an important gathering is waiting to ponder and discuss over the alarming issue of AIDS in the nation. One suggestion which is often doled out by the government is discontinuing indiscriminate and unprotected sex. In that context it is quite possible that the onlookers were shcked beyond belief of the daring public display of such passionate kisses by Gere.Equally surprising was the body language of Ms.Shetty, who appeared to be giggling and taking the whole thing as a joke. I am sure there is a place and time for every thing in life. No one seems to object when such scenes are depicted in today's movies, thinking pobably it is needed there as per the story. The public constitutes different types of people with differing tastes. I feel that care should be excercised in displaying such scenes in public stages. In truth this is nothing to do with Indo-American relations.

It is so ironic to hear the outrage in India over the Gere-Shetty debacle when in the United States people get outraged because some group gets their overly sensitive feelings hurt. What is freedom, if to people consent to something and the powers that be want to prosecute them? What is freedom if someone voices his or her opinion and gets fired from their job because they hurt someones feelings? The answer is, there really isn't such a thing as freedom anymore. Little things like the Gere-Shetty moment, slip of the tongue comments made by people like Imus and many other instances of this nature have ruined careers and set-back people of all ethnicities and nations from coming together in peace thanks not to the people of the earth, but because of the officials, law makers, governments and special interest groups. If the peoples of the world were left to work things out without the so called watch groups, we would all find a common ground among us all.
Countries do have customs and laws that visitors should respect and Gere was irresponsible in that respect, but the "ambulance chaser" mentality has blown it WAY out of proportion.

This is a matter for tradition not law. The law backs their tradition. We have no right to interfere with their ways of thinking. We force other Countries to think the way we do.
Russia went to the Democratic system, after a few decades they wish they were still under State control and don't like the Democratic system, the Iraq government is the same.
We're forcing our ideals on others without feelings. In Arabia, in order to get along with them we accept their system when in other smaller less serious Countries we threaten them for the same traditional ways of life. Whats the case here? we change our ideals from one Country to the next while they share the same thoughts in order to be accepted by them, how fair is this?
Are you saying R. Gere didn't know, or Shilpa didn't know their/her own basic laws and continued with the kiss? a publicity move, that's all and, it was blown out of proportion by a small conservative group.

My humble opinion is such cases should be consolidated at one place. Section 294 IPC makes such offence cognisable and the party affected May file FIR or private complaint. PERSON WHO IS ANNOYED MAY FILE.
If you make kissing publicly then mothers ,sisters ,brothers, daughters (_in-laws ) will not be safe. If such permission is given people will open Kiss cafe on road side Kiosks. Do you know Indians have lost morals and character as a general rule.

Any one who watched the video are convinced that Shilpa herself was overtaken by surprise when Gere acted in a momentarily excited manner. The entire episode has been blown out of proportion and a mountain is made out of a mole hill !!

Hey..please hold on. Sometime back when Mr.Madugula Phanisarma a popular sahasravadhani(memory-holding artist) went to US and affectionately touched a gal, a lot of law and morals have interfered at both the countries. When compared to this out of blown case, is it not that the case of Gere's advances is definitely objectionable?

You have to understand the mind set in India. Don't ever think that they consider Americans as friends when it comes to male female connections. We are never going to be palsy walsy with the Indians, they really don't like us. It's all publicity. Gere did not do anything that would warrant the kind of publicity that this blown out of proportion incident has taken. He apologized to Shetty, to the people of India and to anyone else involved. They are not going to let go of this. All of a sudden the Indian population has become as pure as than the driven snow.

This is not at all an issue if we consider the shows in many Indian masala films and song scenes. Government should interfere and put an end to such wastage of time on litigation on very minor issues.

In India, most of the times females are considered as 100% right. In India, people all over India think that females follow all the Indian culture/tradition etc. whereas males are treated/considered negatively. There are laws to safeguard females, eg. eve teasing, dowry/ marriage acts etc. There are no laws like ADAM TEASING, DOWRY TAKEN BY FEMALES are unknown. Hence, there will be calamity all over India with regard to male female friendships/relationships.
