Mars is a planet of extremes.
Mars has a valley on it 4000 miles long and almost 1 mile deep (covering some 1200 times the area of the Grand Canyon), and yet has a volcano on it that is over 50km high.
(7 times higher than Mt. Everest!)
Mars displays the effects of running water long ago, and recent asteroid impacts.
Terrain is largly rolling sand dunes some 1.2 - 4 meters high over the vast majority of its plains - with a marked line of cliff faces and canyons dividing the lower plains from the highland areas.

I think the musicianship is there, and the lyrics are better then on previous efforts by the band. I have listened to it throughout 5 times, and there are some disappointing spots on the album, I think that its just another album though compared to the other stuff. It features some really good songs though, the bravado instrumentals that they are famous for are a bit tamed though for my Mars Volta taste. I think that they are just looking for inspiration right now and they are making music at a too fast pace and not checking over the quality and settling for quantity, as is usually the case for bands who make 2 albums over a 2 year period, they will get their groove back, maybe take some time off and go into different solo projects and garner inspiration. BA: Julio Venegas. BA. Instrumentals, but they have very great lyrics too. My day is fine, but I think you knew that by now :)

Hilly, rocky, dusty, mountainous with some canals or rifts in the landscape. There is evidence of previous volcanos and multiple asteroid impacts. Many photos of the surface of Mars are available on the NASA Website and on Space.com.
Simply do an Internet Search for Mars Photos... Bingo.

Here's a website with a map made from the data of the Mars Obiter Laser Altimeter. It will give you a good picture of the overall topography.
