first, stretch the muscles in the area by pointing your toes or pushing your toes down. Almost any leg stretches will help. Take some type of pain killer in moderation. Icing them will be the best thing. Try not to do too much physical activity when they come, stay off your feet if you can. I get shin splints occasionally because i play lacrosse and run everyday. I usually stretch, take advil and ice them every or every other night. Good luck!

To prevent them you need to learn how to stretch them, then they will not get tight. I would put some good ole ben-gay, on the shins, after taking a hot bath, then relax. I stretch mine by standing up , hang on to a counter, or wall, then take one leg and put it behind you so that the top of your foot, is on the floor. You will have to adjust yourself so you can feel the stretch in you shin. Look up stretching on the net, and you will find a picture of how to stretch your shins.

there isn't a whole lot you can do about them except go easy on yourself, maybe apply some muscle pain ointment. rub on them with your hands, self-massage, that kind of thing. try to figure out when you usually get them and avoid that happening! be careful the way you walk/run that you don't step down too hard, especially going downhill.

put water in paper cups and then freeze them. when they're done freezing, peel back the paper, put a towel over them, and rub them over you shins. pain is gone instantly, but don't forget to stretch the muscles.

It is imperative that you adequately stretch and warm up before running, aerobics, or any other strenuous exercise... I get them sometimes if I go walking fast without following my own advice!!!
