Gardenias are usually grown outdoors, in sun or partial shade. If you want to try to grow one indoors, then you should place the plant in a location that receives some direct sun during part of the day, such as a window sill.

Gardenias are woody shrubs, some varieties of which can get 8 feet tall or taller. So to experiment with growing one indoors, you should pick a variety that has been bred to remain small. The Sunset Western Garden Book mentions several small varieties -- for example, "White Gem" grows 1-2 feet tall and is listed as being a good container plant.

Gardenias like an acid soil that drains well but retains moisture. So use plenty of organic matter, such as peat moss, in the potting soil. Good luck!

I stay in Georgia. I even have 2 Gardenias that are a minimum of 18 years previous and that they are the two so massive, i won't be able to be certain over the suitable of them. additionally, they have a girth (distance around) of 20 ft! utilising them as a house or patio plant i assume could artwork. I in no way tried pruning them lower back, i assume you're able to be able to desire to. once you pass to the nursery, the plant ought to have a tag on it, and it will inform you methods super it will be at adulthood. Amazingly, they survived the three day chilly blast we had. The temp went right down to 27 tiers, uncommon in Georgia for that component to 365 days. All of our deciduous timber have been in finished bloom and we misplaced seventy 5% of our flowers. yet, the Gardenias won no harm. the only reason I point out this is by using the fact somebody became writing approximately chilly climate and distinctive planting zones. i wish you are able to artwork some thing out, as I too am very prepared on the Gardenia.
