Your child should enter the water as early as possible to bulid a comfort zone. By taking parent-child lessons as an infant your child becomes comfortable in the water and will be more prepared for independent lessons later on. If you wait too long the child may establish a fear of the water (fear of the unknown) and will be much harder to teach.

Of course, it's up to you when you think your chlid is ready but earlier is always better!!! My favorite classes are full of 3-year-olds who are not afraid to jump into the pool and swim around underwater ( =

It really depends on the child. Before the age of 6, you should encourage enjoying the water, if the child is willing to explore in the water, lessons will help them develop skills more quickly. Around the age of 6, it becomes a more needed skill for safety's sake. Near that age, they do a lot more playing on their own and are exploring their independence. The most important thing is to not push a child to develop these water skills when they are resistant at a young age. A good teacher might be able to bring them around, but it often takes a lot of individualized time and sometimes doesn't help at all. Fear of water is the thing you want to avoid first, which allows for the learning of safe water practices.

The intructor can answer that question better.

But I have seen babies in diapers swim before... well not like swimming, they were floating. They would kick their feet, and then roll to their backs to breath. This guy (the instructor) was throwing them off the boat - pretty cool to see.

It will also depend on the child's reaction, and most likely - your participation. I know my newphew won't swim at a young age because he lacks concentration.

good luck

Some children learn right away and some don't catch on until later. If you feel your child is ready then take 'em to some classes. The instructor will let you know if it's a good idea to continue or to wait until later. No two children are alike.

I was put into infant swimming classes... gosh.
But I'd say around 6, because that's when they really start learning the strokes.
