It's an equation. "x" stands for some number that you don't know, and is called a variable. When a constant (2) is written beside a variable (x), multiplication is implied.

Written out, "2x=8" means "two times (some number) equals eight."

It should be pretty easy to figure out what number you have to multiply by two to get 8.

The formal way to get the answer (divide both sides of the equation by 2) is described by other answerers already.

x=4

because you want to get rid of that 2 by the x, which is showing 2 times x

so you do the opposite opperation of multiplication on the right side with the 2

which would be division
so you divide 8 by 2

giving you 4

yeah it is just a multiplication problem so basically it is saying
2 times x equals 8 so x=4 2 times 4 equals 8
2(4)=8

x=4

divide by 2 on both sides:

2x/2=x because the 2's cancel out

8/2 is 4

so your answer is x=4

this is a problem where you have to solve for x

to solve for x, you have to isolate it

to isolate it you have to divide both sides by 2

8/2=4

so x=4
