World war 2 only. It was invented then. It was used to show the Japanese that we (the Allies) would utterly destroy the Japanese homeland and not invade it. The fact we had only 3 bombs to bluff with didn't matter, we used 2 of them.
The use of the bombs has been a topic that strikes the nerves of liberals and people of sound mind. The bombs were the best answer for ending the war. Untold hundreds of thousands Allied solders, (USA, Russian, and other nations) would have died in an invasion. Japans losses would have been in the millions. Killing 200,000 or so seems like a big deal until you look at the cost would have been for an invasion.
The fact the bombs were used is most likely the reason why it hasn't been used since. Everyone can see first hand what a small one did to a city.

The Atomic Bomb, was the Project created by the Americans in the 40's after pooling the resources of escaped scientists from Europe, British Empire and the United States under American Control called the Manhattan Project.
The British, French, German, Italian and Americans where all working on Atomic Fusion before this but in seperate areas with differing ideas.
By early 1945 a working prototype had been created at the project, but numerous scientists where worried about the effects the explosion would make, from not a great deal of damage up to the stripping of all the Hydrogen Atoms from the Earths Atmosphere. The debate carried on and the scientists settled into two differing views of to use / not to use. Finally the Military stepped up and made the decision for them by the 'Trinity' Test, which was just in time for the Potsdam Conferance at the end of the European Conflict.
However, the explosive power shocked so many of the leading scientists at the project they again asked for the President (Truman) to allow representatives of the Japanese Empire to attend another demonstaration under a flag of truce so they could see the power for themsleves and see what could happen to the home islands. This was dismissed, as impractical as there might be a misfire or damp squib problem.
Hiroshima and Nagasaki where then subjected to the only two bombs in existance. Both where different bombs but had a yeild in the 16 kiloton range ( a real firecracker compared to the ICBM's these days and are considered more a Tactical Nuke now).
The next set of bombs would not have been ready for a number of Months, so Operation Olympic (The invasion of the Japanese Home Islands) would have gone ahead to begin with and then History would have been very different as Soviet Russia would have been free to invade north Japan and take the whole of Korea.

LOL! There was no atomic bomb in WW1. It materialised in the 1940's, with the Manhattan Project in the US. The US used the weapon against Japan, to prevent it from allying itself with the Soviet Union. It's use was purely Cold War minded. It would have happened later, if it had been 'to save lives' (of US troops), end the war ect... It was a direct answer to a negotiated agreement between Japan & Russia stipulating the creation of the largest joint navy in the world. The US, already at tension with Stalin over Eastern Europe, did not want to see Japan in Russia's sphere of influence.
More technical information, you'll find it on wikipedia.

There is now alot of questions being asked whether the nuclear bomb should have been used. One lot are arguing that Japan was a beaten country and would have surrendered instantly if their emporer who they saw as a god was guaranteed safety. The Russians were also nearly ready to invade and the Americans were fairly near and already blockading Japan. They could have taken Japan without the bomb.
Reasons for using the bomb were to save allied lives - this was Truman's official view - , both military and those in the Japanese camps, to shorten the war
It is also believed that the bomb was used as a warning to Stalin - don't get too big for your boots or we'll nuke you too.
Those against the bomb argue that it saved millions of lives and shortened the war. In fact, the Japanese did not surrender until they got their assurance from the American that the Emporer would be safe - they used him to form a puppet government after the war.

the second world war and only twice, 6th August 1945 at Hiroshima and the 9th August 1945 at Nagasaki. The bombs were considered both too volatile and expensive to make on a grand scale although it was considered.

the atomic bomb was dropped on Japan under US President Harry S Truman.
August 6, 1945-"Little Boy" was dropped on the city of Hiroshima
August 9, 1945-"Fat Man" nuclear bomb dropped over Nagasaki.
Most people would say that these bombs ended WWII sooner than it ever would have ended without them.

It wasn't invented during WW1!
It was used twice at the end of WW2 to destroy Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Do you have a more precise question?
