The "glycerin" soap base you'll find at Michael's is poor quality, supremely expensive and detergent based. It isn't really soap at all, but several detergents, some glycerin and maybe a little shea butter or goat's milk mixed in.
Wholesalesuppliesplus.com is a decent source for what you're looking for. You'll just need to search by another name: Melt & Pour soap base.
Here's another source that I've had good luck with: http://www.soapandthings.com/c-14-m-p-soap-making.aspx
It's fun to make, safe and (besides color and scent) you can add things to it like finely ground oatmeal, honey or cocoa butter.
SFIC (sficcorp.com) probably makes the best melt and pour base out there, but you'd have to buy in huge quantities. If you use the link above, you'll find it by the pound, decent quality and at a good price.

First of all, soap isn't "made" with glycerin. Liquid glycerin is a by-product of the soapmaking process. If by "glycerin" you mean the transparent melt and pour blocks of soap you can get in hobby shops those are not technically "soap" but rather a synthetic detergent bar (there are exceptions to this- Stephenson and SFIC bases being two I know of). We call those M&P (for Melt& Pour). M&P can be quite easy to do, since really all you ahve to do is melt and pour into a mold. Some talent can come into play with various coloring or decorating techniques but for the most part it's very simple.
You're going to have to do quite a bit of reading and research to delve into true soapmaking. All true soaps are actually "glycerin" soaps, it's just that somewhere along the line we seem to have begun referring to only transparent soaps as "glycerin soap".
Soap is made by using a combination of fats/oils and sodium hydroxide. It can be made to be extremely gentle--I'm not talking about the kind of mis-measured lye soap that grandmas used for the laundry! BUT you cannot make soap without lye (sodium hydroxide). No lye, and you have a synthetic detergent, not a soap.
If you don't want to use to more costly coconut, palm and olive oils, you can make soap with shortening and/or lard as well, or even your own rendered tallow.
Here's a great site to begin reading to see if this is something you'd like to do www.millersoap.com
Enjoy!

You could try e-bay or a great on line store that has reasonable prices is www.wholesalesupplesplus.com You can order as much or as little as you want. About $6.95 shipping and handling for 2 lbs. the $6.95 is what is charged for up to i think its $25.00 in sales.
depending on where you live it should only take about a week to get your order.
I just placed an order with them last Friday and I'll have my products by Thurs. You can get faster delivery if necessary.
You need the melt and pour glycerin found in the craft section not the pharmacy section (unless you want to make your own bubble bath).

Try going to a health food store, or you can go to several places online. One of my favorites for glycerin (usp) is soapcrafters.com
Email me, and I can give you the name of other suppliers.
Price varies depending on method of shipping.
I think soapcrafters was $4 for 16 oz., plus shipping.
Added plus is great bath and body recipes found there.

Did you look other places for glycerine? Drug stores should carry it .. check out walmart or somewhere like that.
There are melt and pour soaps that you can buy..just heat/melt and pour into moulds.
