First off i just want to say that im a complete layman when it comes to cars. So here's my situation. I have a 96 chevrolet cavalier. A couple of days ago the car overheated and all hell broke loose. I noticed that i no longer had a belt. I got the car towed to a mechanic who told me that i needed to get a new ac compressor in addition to adding new belt. Had told me that the ac compressor was stuck and needed to get replaced. I didnt get the ac compressor fixed because the dude wanted $800 bucks for the repair. The belt was replaced. So my question is...Can i drive this car even though i have a stuck ac compressor

Sure you can drive it with a frozen A/C compressor.
You just can't drive it with frozen bearings.

Just unplug it to make sure it NEVER turns on.

You say the belt was replaced and I assume the engine has been run. If that's the case, yes you can drive the car, but I would unplug the clutch wires from the compressor so the clutch can't be inadvertantly engaged.

In front of the ac compressor is the clutch, if you can spin the clutch, not where the belt spins on the pulley itself, but in the very front of it. Is where the clutch is. If you can't spin that, then the ac compressor is bad. Hope that makes sense on what I was trying to point out. Good luck.

The compressor is stuck if the pulley is frozen, try to turn the pulley by hand, with no belt on it the pulley should turn easily, if it is frozen you cannot put a belt on it and drive, the belt will snap off.

if you look at the front of the compressor w/ the air on and the fan on high and the clutch which is shaped like a funky triangle - is not moving your clutch is shot.

If it doesn't disengage when you turn the switch to off...

If it won't turn on/engage, it may be low on freon...

Of course, if the clutch engages, and all you hear is a very loud squeal, with smoke, it's the compressor that is seized...

if it burned 1 belt up then it will burn up another 1.if you dont care about air, just get a used 1 at the junk yard, and you wont have to hook up the hoses or anything, just bolt it up so the belt has something to run on.
