try putting coffee cans around the early plant and keep them trimmed up the stock about a foot off the ground, we use -wire reinforcement for concrete- as cages so the tomatoes grow up, not out. the "tomato cages they sell are too short. then we also put down newspaper-- not colored print or glossy paper-- then put grass clippings on that. keeps the blight down and the bugs away. good luck
