it is possible, but pretty difficult to pull it off. not only are you likely to be found out, but the game company itself can sue you if you manage to do it.

often, games are shipped to various stores about a week to a few days before their release, and then they are held in boxes with tape on them that say "do not open until [date]"

for example, pokemon diamond and pearl came into my store on the 18 of april. i checked in 6 copies of each game. to date, we have only sold one copy of pearl, and no one has bought diamond.

but for four days, it was in our building, and if someone would have taken it *OR* sold it, not only would they have been arrested for theft (they could not possibly ring it into the cash register - the UPC wasn't introduced til saturday night), and lost their job for breaking policy, i would have forwarded their name to the information on the packing slip, and further legal action would have taken place, with gamefreak suing whoever pulled such an act

If you work for a gaming magazine, you can get some beta games so that you can write a review just in time for the game to be released.

Even in the world of game piracy, they can't make a ROM of a game until a game is released. That's the only way they can deconstruct the game and then reconstruct it for the PC.

Sometimes you see the actual game date on a website... but if your lucky, your city/town will have it a few days before, Zellers 2 days before the actual release date. Or... you could just Pre-Order it online.
