I am going to assume you mean

1) the TOTAL number of squares
2) That you must use the entire board in a configuration
3) That you are looking for a maximum number of squares (so a 6x6 square is no good since it leaves 'leftovers')

Ok.. so here we go..

a) ok.. there are 64 small squares
b)these can be combined to make 4x4 squares so that makes 4 more squares
c) the Board itself is a large square..

for a total of 69.

.
you can offset those squares

8^2 squares of side 1, 7^2 squares of side 2, 6^2 squares of side 3, etc... down to 1^2 squares of side 8. 8^2 + 7^2 + ... + 1^2 = 204.
