The range of a router is determined by many factors.

1) How high is the routers antenna off the floor? The higher you can place the router above the computers that are using the wireless on it the better.

2) How many walls and floors does a signal need to pass through to get to your computer and what material are they made of or insulated with? Concrete floors and walls with foil covering the instelation in them will degrade a signal or stop it all together if it is thick enough.

3) Are there any Wireless phones, Cell and Land Line, within 6 feet of your router or your computers? Most of these phones and there basestations work on the same frequencies as your wirless router, so keep them as far away as possible to avoid interference.

4) Are there other wireless networks near you working on the same freq. channels? Use a program like netstumbler, get it at http://www.netstumbler.com , and what channels all the other routers in your area are transmitting on. By default most routers use channel 6. The 3 nest channels to use are channels 1, 6 and 11 because they have the least freq overlap. If there are other wireless networks in your area working on the same channel as you are, go into your routers wireless settings and change your transmitter channel.

Hope these help.....

A range extender placed near the limit of range of the router will almost double the range.

It depends on what the signal has to go through, how much interference there is in the area, the height of the router off the ground, and many other variables.
