There IS a freshwater crab. It's called a fiddler crab I believe (I used to work at a fish store). They're about 3" in diameter full grown. The males have one big claw and the females don't really have claws. Beware of putting them with any small fish (or any fish really). They will catch, kill and eat any fish that they are able to get a hold of. Advantageous as they are.
Hermit crabs are cool too, but they're terristrial.

The only animal close to a "freshwater crab" is the Cockroach crayfish (Aegla platensis: http://www.belowwater.com/Fish/C7DF42F6-0414-4F68-BE59-7D70FCF14A39.html ), although most pet stores keep crabs in freshwater. Fiddlers and red clawed (Thai) crabs should be kept in brackish tanks - which include a way for them to get out of the water - they'll do much better.

Even hermit crabs, with the exception of the Ecuadoran hermit require saltwater: http://www.hermit-crabs.com/species.html

Usually (as far as i know) there are NO freshwater crabs. They are all brackish. You can keep a crab in there for a little while but don't expect it to live more than 2 months if that. You can make brackish water by putting 1-2 teaspoons of salter per gallon. Hope this helps.

If you are looking for something to put in your fish tank there are fidler craps (they have one big claw) and their are spider crabs that are very little. We use to have cray fish in our tank at one point. Just be carefull not to put them with bottom eating fish (such as gold fish) because the gold fish will not survive their much dangerous claws.
