There is a safety device on the ac called a pressure switch. If the freon level is below a certain pressure, then the clutch will not engage to have the AC come on.

If the system is low in freon then the clutch will not engage...but you might want to try tapping the cycling switch...which is located in the receiver/drier...If the system is full of freon, then the cycling switch may be faulty, or it might just be low in freon due to a small leak...Before you got to a repair shop...cut the A/c on then under the hood, tapp on the cycling switch...if the compressor comes on, then replace the switch...if not have system checked for leakes...but you can also but a small leak repair kit w/freon at most advanced parts stores...please let me know what you have figured out...gotspeed7883@yahoo.com

It could just be low on freeon they won't engage if they are low. Keep's from burning up your compressor . Take it to a garage it only takes about 10 minutes to test.
