For me, in order of preference from most to least:
1. Texas: I live here now! Best state in the country, as well as the friendliest.
2. Louisiana: It's my home, and it's still incredible.
3. Oklahoma: still pretty nice like Texas, just not as much to do.
4. Washington: Olympic peninsula, Puget Sound, the Cascades, rainforests, wineries, Seattle...
5. North Carolina: the most beautiful state east of the continental divide. It's becoming "yankeeland," though.
6. Colorado: I love to visit, hit the ski slopes, and club in Denver, but I don't think I'd live there.
7. Kentucky: Redneck culture prevails. Horrible drivers, very nasty personalities, lack of economic progression. Sucks!

From a Dutchman (European)'s point of view, I would answer the following:

1: Washington: beautiful nature, fairly quiet, most leftist state of the seven countries in the list (and therefore politics closest to European one)
2: Louisiana: great culture, beautiful city New Orleans
3: Colorado: great nature, quiet
4: North Carolina don't know much about this state but seems fair to live in
5: Oklahoma: seems pretty rural and therefore boring to me
6: Texas: very right-wing and conservative. Too hot weather. At least it has some big cities.
7: Kentucky: my image of this state is that it's very backward. Sorry to say. :)

I think that North Carolina is nice, and I like Texas, I've been there before. It's really nice, like you said. I like Kentucky, and Louisiana, and I really like Wahington. I like Colorado too! They're all my favorites!
