You are sitting in your car and are being waited on. Not much different than sitting in a restaurant. After you get your food and need something else. You'll push the call button, someone will bring out what ever else you wanted. It is still not much different than a restaurant. So tip, if it is a Sonic you go to alot. You will find that you'll get really good service the next time you go there. Just like you would at a regular sit down restaurant you frequently go to. Car hops talk to one another, just like waiters do. I always tip someone if I am the one being served. It goes to show that person that you appreciate their service and time. Just ask your self, if I were doing their job. Would you appreciate someone giving you a tip? I know I would.

Having been a sonic car hop, I can tell you that unlike waitresses or waiters, car hops actually make minimum wage, instead of the management expecting them to make up the difference out of their tips. However, if you think about them running around in the freezing weather or rain, or hot weather, you can imagine they do a lot of work, and greatly appreciate even a small tip.
I always tip them.

I have more often than not NOT tipped them, they dont make a whole lot of money in tips per day and I can guarantee that they dont count on it to support their families. If you get exceptional service, a friendly carhop or fast delivery then you should tip and tip well. Otherwise I wouldnt feel bad about it, its not necessary. Heres some rules of thumb about tipping: Tip These people: Waiters-15-20% Hair dressers-10% Baristas (The girl who makes your coffee at starbucks)use your judgment, if you order something really complicated, throw in more but generally 50 cents is good. Valets a dollar or so Any person who carts your luggage (be it in a hotel or airport)- A dollar or so Hosts/hostesess- you dont have to tip them but if they give you a really good table i would. Cab drivers- 10% The general idea is that if someone provides you a service you tip them. These people dont make a whole lot of money and your tips make up for that gap. I make about 20 dollars a day in tips at starbucks and they are split between 7 other people! So thats 140 dollars that people give into the tip jar per 8 hour period. I have to laugh if someone orders something that is ridiculously complicated and they throw in 2 pennies REALLY hard so it makes a lot of noise ROFL Thats all I can think of for now.

Unless they're rude to you, why not tip them a buck or two? I think it's all part of the schtick at Sonic or any other place like that. They do hard work and probably get paid minimum wage or less. Servers often do.

The whole world of tipping is a big gray area.

The car hops at sonic work for tips, but I'm sure they don't get any frequently.

Sonic is considered fast food to me so I don't tip.
I only tip at sit down restaurants.

They get paid regular wages so a tip isn't absolutely necessary...but I think the whole 'I can roller skate and carry food' thing is supposed to impress you so that you want to tip them. I wouldn't give too much...and it isn't necessary...but it might a nice thing to do.

I wouldn't do it. It's just like other Drive Through places. You order and drive away. What's a point to give them tip?

Wish...I had a Sonic to go to. We don't have them here, but I love their commercials!
