We had a hamster that died of wet-tail in early January. Now my mom is experiencing stomach discomfort, such as bloating. Is it possible this germ or bacteria was transmitted from the hamster? We threw away all the stuff and disinfected the area, but could she have gotten it while handling the hamster before we knew the hamster had it?

I think you'll find your mom's stomach discomfort is a coincidence.

Wet tail is not zoonotic (cannot be transmitted between animals and humans). Furthermore it is a bacterial infectin, so your mom would've had to literally lick the hamsters poo off her finger to have caught the bacteria - it doesn't just float around the air.

By the way, 'wet tail' is just a name for bacterial diarrhoea in small mammals - it has nothing to do with actually having a tail, it's just called this because the diarrhoea makes the tail area dirty and 'wet'.

Prolific enteritis (wet-tail) is generally not transmitted to humans, although some diseases hamsters have can be. It's important to note that diarrhea is a *symptom* of wet-tail, not the disease itself, and that other diseases can have the exact same symptom and not BE wet-tail, including the parasitic giardia infection, which CAN be transmitted to humans. It is extremely unlikely that your mother caught anything from your hamster that died in January and is only now becoming ill - most diseases and illnesses have a shorter incubation period - she would have become ill in January, not now. I can't even think of any illnesses a hamster would have had that had this long of an incubation period.

No. no longer all hamsters die of moist-tail. yet often i might say approximately ninety 8% of them do. it incredibly is an fairly faital affliction, and could be contageous to toher hamsters. So in case you have any others please seperate them now. the only genuine anwer is to pass to the vet. yet considering you are able to no longer then, pass to PETCO or PetSmart or yet another puppy keep and see in the event that they have Dri-Tail. Your assume to place it of their water. yet often whilst they have moist-tail they end eating and eating because of the fact they are too susceptible. So in the past it gets to that time purchase it immeadiately. it ought to probably keep your hamster. yet with out going to the vet, there is sort of no risk of it residing. whether you do pass to the vet, the diagnoses isn't ought to. And it does no longer be incredibly worth your funds to help it any further.. So carry on with those steps. yet, i'm sorry. there is incredibly no risk. in case you spot those signs and warning signs: Diarhea Getting weaker familiar Stops eating and eating gets Very skinny won't be lively(Dpesn't pass in any respect plenty) Has a terrible scent Tail is moist and backside by using tail is grimy(Diarhea, bedding, blah caught to it) Eyes start to close and is basically too vulnerable to open them supplies some squeaks (Faint,, yet loud adequate to hearken to, kinda like how guinea pigs squeak) respiratory is going quicker, then slower and slower, and gasps for air Then this is going to offer all this is capability in one final breath and die So, regrettably that's what is going to ensue on your hamster so as. I recommend do no longer play inclusive of your hamster whilst it shows those signs and warning signs. it ought to reason extra injury. permit it stay in peace, and characteristic a reliable relax of this is existence.. it incredibly is all i'm able to assert. i'm hoping this helps. Be reliable..=]

Never heard of this before. God, I hope not!

I'm sorry to hear about your hamster. Your mom probably needs to see a doctor if this doesn't go away soon. She may have gallstones.

As far as I know you cannot get wet tail bcuz humans dont have tails. Wet tail is only on the tail you cant get it anywhere else. And usually humans dont get affected by animal sicknesses, depending on what it is.
