This is just a tidbit...

- Even after our Revolution, France sent troops to invade New Orleans circa 1802-1803.

- The first units to fire on US soldiers entering North Africa were...Vichy.

- Even after saving his country, De Gaulle had the gaul to spew: "France has no allies, only interests."

- France had over 3 billion in oil development contracts with Saddam Hussein...thus their refusal to back the Gulf War cease fire agreement that demanded that Saddam disarm. And before you, Humanist, go spewing quotes, this was both Clinton and Bush policy.

BTW...anyone who has studied history...despises the French...not just the "cons" that you hate.

BTW...to extend the conversation...why do you, Francophile, despise cons so much?

Folks should make a point to visit Verdun. If you want to understand what really is at the dark center of the French soul, you must understand Verdun and the slaughter of WWI.

More French died at that one battle then all American dead combined in both World Wars.

I have traveled and worked among the French and they are first class folks.

I like Germans too...and hey Belgians and Austrians aren't bad either...and how about the Danes, the Dutch, the Norwegians, Swedes, Finns...all are great!!

When was the last time any of these folks won a war...don't see anyone bashing them on a regular basis...???

In generally they seem to be a very liberal minded self loathing people. You did see my question about the poll that showed that the French hate the French more than any other country hates the French right?

I actually think there's a nugget of truth in this question. French intellectuals and the American neo-cons share the weakness of valuing theory over practice and of falling madly in love with an elegantly stated syllogism--even if its underlying premises are absurd.

(I state this as the embodiment of something an oxymoron--a Republican-leaning Francophile.)

Actually that is a bit insulting to the French. The French have been vilified by the American media, and especially conservative pundits as effeminate and spineless. However, I think their reticence to go to war isn’t found in any form of whimpering fear on their part, as much as it is grounded in the truism that they subscribe to that the intellect, and the diplomacy that stems from it, are far more efficient tools to remedy global dilemmas than the use of force. Conservatives, of the “hawkish” variety that have now become dominate in Washington, don’t share this contemplative, intellectual, and peaceful disposition with the French.

If you want to compare the conservatives to anyone, you should compare them to you typical armchair quarterback that is obsessed with Monday night football. Sure, from the way he speaks about football, he poses himself as this masculine figure with in depth knowledge in the subject matter, but look deep inside and you will see a cowardly figure lacking in true masculinity or knowledge, and who merely uses rhetoric about football as a tool to mask his own shortcomings.

The French are historically far from meek. They have, after all, in their rich and varied history, been involved in numerous armed conflicts and have had many illustrious war heroes, one of which being Napoleon.

There experiences in war have taught them that whatever heroism and greatness that the immature American mind might associate with the act of war is a myth. Most seasoned societies who have long histories of being involved in conflict know there is nothing to be lionized about going to war, and that such armed struggles produce much heartache and misery, and these sufferings far outweigh any political gains that might be achieved.

To me I see France, Spain, and Germany as older nations who represent father figures to western society. I see our country, the United States, as a petulant child who is too immature to learn from the elder nations who have experienced the historical blunders that were costly both monetarily and in terms of human life. I just wonder how many more men and women will have to be lost on our side before we share the same hesitation as the French and the Germans do of going to war?

Conservatives don’t share the laudable traits of the French that allow the French to resist the temptation to go to war for useless and self-serving ends. If they did, people like you and myself would not see the need to spend so much time lambasting them for their hubris and immorality.

Speaking in a tongue of a spiteful person against a political party within our friendly country, it sounds as if you "despise" the French as well.
