Being a laptop, it is probably able to connect to the schools wireless system. Theres a chance they might show up in the parking lot to try to connect to the internet. the tech poeple if they already didnt, should make it noticeable if that happens and try to find the person. otherwise if there was any kind of contract involved when renting, u might be in luck if that was part of a warranty. ive got a $2,100 laptop. i dont know how mad i would be if it got stolen.

If they are trying to trace it that means it has some kind of tracing software installed on it, that once the thief connects to the internet, their location will be revealed. As far as your financial liability, I would guess it would depend upon any agreement or paperwork you may have signed when you agreed to rent it, or if you were negligent and/or didn't exercise reasonable diligence concerning the laptop. Hopefully, the school's insurance will cover the loss. I hope they catch the creep, good luck and I hope you get it back. Also, should they make you liable for the laptop, take into consideration it's present value (laptops depreciate quickly), you shouldn't be liable for replacement cost, but what the value was at the time of the theft.

They didn't offer you insurance either? In case you managed to drop one on the floor or such? If you didn't buy one, then I guess, well, you may have to foot the bill. Figure $100 a month for next 24 months (hey, there's interest when you make installment payments)

Next time, put a proximity alarm on it.

too bad you didn't insure it while it was in your possesion. there is no way to tell what is on their mind. they might have insurance that will cover the theft. all you can do is wait and hope it goes your way.
