The Lockheed SR-71 was an advanced, long-range, Mach 3 strategic reconnaissance aircraft developed from the Lockheed YF-12A and A-12 aircraft by the Lockheed Skunk Works. The SR-71 was unofficially named the Blackbird; its crews often called it the Sled, or the Habu ("snake"). The SR-71 line was in service from 1964 to 1998. Clarence "Kelly" Johnson was the man behind many of the design's advanced concepts. The SR-71 was one of the first aircraft to be shaped to reduce radar cross section. However, the aircraft was not stealthy and still had a fairly large radar signature. The aircraft flew so fast and so high that if the crew detected a surface-to-air missile launch, the standard evasive action was simply to accelerate. Thirteen aircraft are known to have been lost, all from non-combat related reasons.

It's a US spy plane that was used between 1968-1998. It was desinged by Lockheed-Martin in the famous skunkworks. The blackbird was a recon plane designed to evade capture. These planes flew over many countries in the world at high altitude and high speed to take pictures of areas of interest to the US. It was the fastest plane in the world in normal military use during its era. It's top speed exceeded Mach 3. The "payload" was usually a suite of high precision cameras and sensors.

It flew so high and so fast that if one developed trouble over California, they'd clear it for an emergency landing in Florida.
