1820... there was a lot of controversy over slavery at that time. Missouri applied for statehood as a slave state, but that would upset the balance between the number of free and slave states. Henry Clay, a.k.a. "The Great Compromiser", proposed the Missouri Compromise. Under that compromise, Missouri entered as a slave state, Massachussetts agreed to give up some of their land to make up Maine, which entered as a free state, and any state that entered the Union north of the 36 degrees, 30' line, MO's southern border, would have to enter as a free state. That way, the number of slave states and free states remained balanced... for the time being.

It became a state in 1820 as part of the Missouri Compromise. Missouri wanted to be a state but there were already an equal number of slave and free states. To allow Missouri in as a slave state there had to be another free state to keep things even so they took Maine, which until then was part of Massachusetts, and made it a separate (free) state.
