There were many collegiate football players that went undrafted in the recently concluded NFL draft. A number of them, Kyle Shotwell from Cal - Poly, Enoka Lucas from Oregon, Melvin Bullit from Texas A & M, the two players from the 2007 Fiesta Bowl champion Boise State Broncos Brad Lau and Jared Zabransky, and Tala Esera from Hawaii, were of exceptional pedigree but their names were never called to the podium at Radio City Music Hall this weekend. Is it possible for these players to make an NFL team without being drafted ?

They become free agents eligible to sign with any team right after the draft. Many of them have been in contact with several teams and they may sign wherever they feel they have the best chance at earning a roster spot or at least getting onto the practice squad. Many players have earned roster spots without being drafted so yes there will be guys this year that will earn their way onto a roster somewhere. Actually some will benefit from not being drafted...take for example Zabransky, he can choose where to sign based on what he perceives is the competion rather than being drafted and having to battle 2 or 3 other solid guys for a 3rd QB slot. He may end up in Minnesota, Miami or any other team that lacks depth.

They can go through free agency. There are a number of players who were taken through free agency today by the NFL teams. The problem is that a minute percentage of free agency players ever play on an NFL team. They would have to be really exceptional.
Another way is for them to sign with an Arena Football team or go to Europe and play in the World Football League. Many of the free agents that the NFL teams sign are assigned to one of these teams to see what potential they have. One of those turned out to be a Super Bowl Quarterback.

Out of the 7 rounds in the NFL draft, there are probably 15-20 players from 1-AA drafted, maybe 3 -5 make a team and maybe 1 every year becomes a standout. He would have to really stand out and probably run under a 4.6 and be at least 6'2"

Yes it is not only possible, but very likely. After going undrafted they being free agents. Now any team that wants them can take them. Its sometimes better to go undrafted than it is to be picked very late, because teams will bid on them, thus giving some more money. Just because a player goes undrafted doesnt mean that they arent very goo. There is a pretty decent sized list of players who are in the hall of fame that were never drafted by any team. So this doesnt mean that they are doomed.

Of course many players go undrafted and play in the NFL. Jake delhomme, Tony Romo, Rod Smith, Priest Holmes, just to name a few, never got drafted.
