Here's the story. My son is 6 months old and has had trouble going to the bathroom since day one. From 0-4 months I tried different formulas and the only formula that didn't cause trouble was Similac (He has to take Lactose free due to a lactose problem when he was 2 months old). Now that he is on baby food and rice cereal it doesn't matter what kind of formula he takes--he really struggles to go potty. Sometimes he struggles for several minutes and has one small little "pebble" in his diaper. I have been giving him 2 oz of prune juice every day which helps a little. Will switching to baby oatmeal help? Any other methods to try? I have tried water and Karo syrup, doesn't work and since this is a long term problem, I don't want to give him syrup every day.

We are actually going to the doctor tomorrow. But she seems to act like it is no big deal (at least at previous visits she did). Maybe the problem is that I need to get him a new doctor!

Have you tried the advice of a doctor? It sounds to me like you've tried everything I've even been told to try with constipated babies. Maybe he has some digestive or intestinal problems going on.

Talk to your doctor about apple prune juice blend and more than what your giving him my son at 3 months was getting 2 oz jiuce with 2 oz of water. also belive it or not the rice cereal in his bottle that i feed him once a day has helped which is weird cause i was told rice cereal will make it worse but i dont even give him juice anymore and he has a soft formed stool everyday before he was struggling real bad and i could tell he was uncomfortable Best thing is to talk to your dr first before trying anything Good luck I feel your pain that your feel for your child I was constiapted most of my life until recently i ended up having my entire large intestine removed to resolve my problem which is real rare by the way but i know what if feels like to be plugged up sorry for the long answer.
GOOD LUCK

oh my have i been around and around with this one!! i have a 7month old and she's the exact same way, i started her on solids and then she was always constipated and went from being an angel to crying and fussy all day!
with each feeding of solids i give her, i mix in about a tablespoon or two of prunes. even with cereal and i use oatmeal cereal and that is less constipating then the others. also don't give bananas they are very constipating and if your baby will take water try to give him about 4oz a day. but the prunes work wonders...this is the absolute only thing that worked for my baby. but this may only work for you if you get her unclogged first, try a baby suppository to get her to go. then try this to manage the problem
GOOD LUCK HOPE BABY FEELS BETTER I KNOW THE FEELING!

My son who is now almost a year had the same problem we worked with our doctor and came up with that he was lactose intolerent and also was allergic to the proteins in soy so we ended up giving him similac alimentum which is costly but it solved the problem and he has now out grown all of it and is drink milk. They also told me to give him 4 oz of pear juice a day becasue apple juice is constipating. Hope that helps and your baby feels better soon. I know how frusterating it can be.

I think you need to speak to a doctor. Also when giving him rice cereal try the whole grain stuff and lots of fruit and veges. You can boil and mash them up or buy them in a jar. Make sure he is drinking water as well as milk! The prune juice should and you can mix a thing called benefibre in it but u need a doctors opinion on that first.... but seek a medical opinion . And NEVER use laxatives on a baby

I had the same problem with my 3rd child. Karo will not hurt him at all. You might want to increase the amount a little until you get the results your looking for.
Oatmeal is good but may give him gas --you can try it.
My pediatrician gave my daughter Lactulose for her bottle. It is a prescription but works well. I usually gave to her in her morning bottle.
You can ask or try the other 2 things above and see how it goes. A little more Karo won't hurt him.
Good Luck!

My daughter's doctor recommended Milk of Magnesia. I gave her 1/2 tsp twice a day and it worked great. Once I switched her to soy formula, the constipation cleared up.
