Does anybody know how to make a GIF image with MORE THAN 256 colors?

Also, Yahoo! Mail Beta shows GIFs with more than 256 colors on load. If making one requires special software, the closer to free it is the better.

That image has exactly 256 colors. It's part of the GIF specification- you can't have more than that number of colors. What you can do, though, is make a GIF with a different color pallette, i.e. 256 unique colors out of a much larger selection. Almost any image editor will let you do that. Here's one:

That would be extremely weird because standard GIF's use only 256 colors. Are you sure? Hold on. I checked your example. Its interlaced and non-itnerlaced its different? What makes you so sure that it has more than 256 colors. Pictures can still look okay under that setting. interlaced means that it downloads every other row of pixels first so you have an image right away, non-interlaced means it downloads every row of pixels in order so you have the picture gradually load from top to bottom.
