What is involved in adjusting the valves on a 450r. Mine wiped the exhaust lobe on the cam this weekend and I am going to have to replace it and the exhaust rocker arm. I understand the valves are set with shims but whta is the lash set at? and how do you get the correst setting?

The questions that you ask are the easy ones what about cam chain tension and the real biggie cam timing. Get it wrong and the valves will hit the top of the piston?

You could turn a $500.00 miss into a $2,000.00 mess in less than 1 minute.

Way to dificult to explain on this forum.

Besides if you have to ask this question at all then you need to go to a professional.

Good luck

Here's a picture of your engine.

After you measure the valve clearance, remove the rocker arms.
Remove the buckets with a magnet and the shims are underneath.
Measure the shim with a micrometer and calculate how much thicker or thinner of a shim you need to correct the clearance.
Like Chukee said, if you're removing the camshaft, then you have to contend with the cam timing and the cam chain tension-er.

Here's my usual bit of advice - anyone attempting to work on their own machine should own a shop manual. You've invested so much time and money on your precious machine. Why trust answers you get from strangers on message boards?

You'll need a shop manual for the valve clearance specs.
