Which ones do you REALLY need and which programs are the best at what they do for their respected categories?

Virus protection - if u r running windows programs
Spyware protection - if u r running windows programs or even connected to internet
Adware protection - same as above
Firewall protection - same as above..
Registry cleaner - optional application to clean registry once in a while(like spring cleaning) to keep things smooth....this is not abosolute necessary...
I would say get AVG, free, fast & secure.. grisoft.com

Their all pretty useful. Virus protection and Spyware protection are both pretty important. Most browsers come with built in adware blockers. Firewall will help make your PC more secure but the Virus and Spywares live protection should be enough. Registry cleaners are pretty useful but you only need to use it like once a month.

There is not a FREE program out there that does it all. But they work well with other programs.

I have Adaware, Spybot, CCleaner AVG Free Anti virus and run an on line scan at www.pandasoftware.com once a week.
Knock on wood, have not had anything seriously on my computer in over 6 years.
Plus it's always nice to know a good site that helps people with computer problems. The one I use is www.geekstogo.com

virus-bitdefender or nod32
spyware,adware-windows defender
registry cleaner-registry mechanic
firewall-zone alarm,norton
programs that cover them all pretty decent
bitdefender,nod32,norton (all of the internet suites)
all are pretty important,but virus and firewall are top priority IMO
if your using a unix system then you dont need to worry bout any of them
