It's just a ditty about sex. Melaine's rollerskates represent her vagina, whilst the brand new key represents a penis.
I'm totally serious about that.

The only thing I know is that brand new key means penis. And it's Melanie's song, not Janis's.

Brand New Key...Melanie , its no Janis, and its referring to the key of a pair of roller skates, back in the day all roller skates had keys to tighten and adjust the skate to your foot.

Don't know, but apprently at 5 years old I used to hate that song and would cry when I heard it....Must have been Melanies squeaky voice that bothered me and hurt my ears*LOL*
