what is the smartest animal [not humans] on earth? and how is it smart?

Chimpanzee are the second smartest animal on earth next to humans. The reason is the ingenuity and manual dexterity of chimpanzee are determined by their tool use. They strip twigs and grass stems to make wands for probing ant and termite nests. Specially selected stones are used to open nuts and hard-shelled fruit. During displays of strength or hunting, some chimps use sticks and rocks as missles. Tool use is a socially learned tradition and varies from one chimp to another.
Are there any other animals that display such unique?

well there is alot of diff. way's that an animal is consiterd smart just like space_coyote_3 said some use tools some communicate with each other and some can solve problems one of the smartest animals i think is the dolphin they are sooo intelligent scientist consider
chimps/apes
dolphins
and humans to be in the same "smartness" group kind of odd but totally true!!

There are a lot of really smart animals that use tools - probably the main thing we look at when deciding if an animal is "smart" or not.
Apes, crows, ravens, monkeys, I've even seen a squirrel use a stick to dig a little or maybe i was seeing things, all use tools.....

It all depends on which list you look at...
For the most part the bulk of the lists contain the following:
-apes
-toothed whales
-pigs
-elephants
-parrots
-crows/ravens
-rats/mice
As far as how they are smart, it really varies. Some use tools, some are problem solvers, some are able to know their reflection in a mirror. I guess it depends on what you consider "smart".

To tell the scientific truth, dolphins are the smartest animals in the world. Humans are able to use there ability to a higher level, though when it comes to the strength of and animals brain, a dolphin is the highest.
