You can use "snake away", which is simply a mixture of sulphur and napthalene ( moth balls ), but it might make your yard quite smelly and a bigger annoyance than the snakes, not to mention damage your lawn, plants, etc., or poison other animals such as birds, rabbits, lizards, dogs, cats, etc. .....

You should leave them alone. Snakes are everywhere and you won't be able to keep them away for long. Get rid of the snakes and you will have a rat, mouse, or other rodent problems. As was stated before, the fact that there are snakes there means that there are probably rodents there too. The best way to control snakes without hurting them is to control any rodent problem. Rodents are responsible for far more human death and disease than snakes ever were or ever will be.

You may also have kingsnakes around depending on where you live, and kingsnakes eat other snakes.

There's not really a whole lot you can do to keep snakes out. Odds are, you live close to a water source since you had a moccasin. Just be sure not to leave anything lying around that would make a good hiding place for a snake. Also, no rock beds and garden ponds. Prime snake habitat!! Make sure you also don't have anything around like dog food or bird seed in your garage or out buildings. They are prime for mice and rats. That may be why he was there, good food source!! Or, he was just sunning himself when, well, we won't go into that. Just that I'm sure you could have called someone instead of killing it.

A cat has always worked for me. I live way out in the countryside, and I have never had a problem with snakes (at my house). The only time we ever had a snake at our house was when our cat was killed by a coyote...otherwise, we've never had a problem.

P.S. The cat I have now is very obese (fat), and even HE keeps both mice and snakes away. Try it!

There is certain to be adults nearby. Why do you want to keep them away? A snake a day keeps the mice away.

There is a granular thing you can sprinkle at the outer lines of your yard and it's actually called, "snake away". We get ours at Lowe's.

Snakes are good, they keep the rodents away! Trust me if you have snakes, you have rodents! I would rather have the snakes!

Why do you want them away? They can be great for a yard and will keep small pests away.
