I think they messed up, Craig Davis on the 1st round ? when they had 2 usc receivers and anthony gonzalez ( they choose him only because he returns kicks and receives ) weddle was necessary ( because they lost edwards ) so it was OK and Waters was a 1 st rounder before his injury so he is a good player but the second day was a nightmare another WR and TE when they have the best TE on the league and they have malumaleuna that he is great 2 and they have like other 4 WR that are fine they picked 2 LB, they lost Keil, their safetys sucks ( Florence and Jammer ) why they picked so many WR when they had to pick cornerbacks is the only position where players are not great on SD, that´s why they lost the playoffs because of the cornerbacks and they picked 3 WR and 2 LB !

Their draft was fine. The Craig Davis pick actually made lots of sense when you consider what kind of WR they need. They don't need a big possesion guy - they have Vincent Jackson and Gates for that. What they needed was a really fast guy to stretch the field and punish safeties for cheating up to stop Tomlinson. Davis is WAY faster than the USC guys and has been playing against much tougher defenses in the SEC vs. the weak defenses in the PAC-10. When safeties have to drop back to respect his speed, it opens things up for everyone else, Gates & Tomlinson included.
Weddle is a safety and is likely to start right away, so that need got addressed. Waters & Siler may help fill the role from Edwards' departure, so good picks there too, I think.
As for the rest, remember that the Chargers last year were among the deepest teams in the league, and have had only a few losses in free agency. The guys they drafted on the 2nd day are unlikely to even make the team, much less get on the field outside of special teams. So I wouldn't read too much into what positions they took with those picks.
Overall, they addressed their needs and didn't do anything else too exciting. They were 14-2 last year with that secondary - I'm not too worried just yet.

Chargers General Manager A.J. Smith has been criticized for reaching on LSU receiver Craig Davis in the first round and on Utah safety Eric Weddle in the second round. But I find it difficult to knock Smith right now because he's been making all the right moves the past two seasons. Davis does have 4.4 speed and possesses a solid stutter-step at the line of scrimmage to break free of press coverage. One knock on him, though, is that teammate JaMarcus Russell wasn't keen on him. Weddle is a tremendous player who was moving up most teams' draft boards. Iowa TE Scott Chandler is a solid blocker while Clemson LB Anthony Waters was ranked as the draft's sixth-best inside backer. Florida's Brandon Siler is very good straight-line linebacker and should make San Diego's special teams. Siler was projected as fourth-rounder and lasted until the seventh.

I'm not a Chargers fan; however, I think they made a couple key mistakes in this draft. First, most football fans know that each team has a roster of 53 guys. If you couple that with the fast that on average a football player only has a career of 4 years, then that's a turnover of around 13 new players a year. Considering that a draft has only 7 rounds, that means a lot of NFL players are undrafted free agents. So, why trade a #2,#3,#5 and a next years #3 just to move up in the 2nd round for a player that most experts consider to be a reach? That doesn't make sense to me.

They did well for themselves, especially with Brandon Siler at the end of the draft, that was a nice value for that late in the draft. The team got what they needed in a WR, but they could have traded down to get him. I've been saying for a while that all they need is a stand out WR and they can make it to the big game (if they can get by New England now) and Craig Davis might be able to do that for them. Nice job, Chargers.

The first pick Davis was a decent pick. Chargers absolutely needed WR help. After that they got little. I was also surprised that they did nothing for DBs, definitely the weakest part of that D.

this draft was fine. The Chargers can afford to gamble on players, as they already have a great team.

Chargers never knew how to draft. They are like the Jets, Colts, and Bengals. They suck at picking players. They got lucky the last few years though.
