The most obvious would be Nikola Tesla. His experiments are the reason we have an AC power grid. Volta is another prominent figure, as well as James Watt, James Maxwell, Carl Friedrich Gauss(although more known for mathematics than magnetism), Ampere, the list goes on and on. However in recent years there has been a lot of research into over unity devices, monopole generators and negative resistors(which Tesla also researched). I have a list of links that should be more useful. The rexresearch link has links to tons of information that many consider "outside the box" concerning electricity and magnetics. I personally believe Ed Leedskalnin understood the nature of magnetism and electricity as well as Tesla did, maybe better.
