My boyfriend and I are moving into a complex and we have a very expensive new dog. He's run away once and we got him back. If someone with a key comes in, they'll for sure either accidentally let him out or steal him. Any suggesstions on how to keep people out-unless you're home ???

Tell management about your pet. Sometimes the complex is strict with animals and you may have to pay a recipient money while you have the animal there. Lucky if you don't have any payments due to pets. I think you can talk to the management about it and you can also get your dog insured. If your complex manager says that they can come in anytime you can always tell them that your dog has run away before because someone open your apartment. You would like to be present in order to avoid this from happening once again. If they tell you that it is not their problem check for rules with their home office and you'll see how fast they change about their way of thinking, specially if your pet is insured and the dog went out because they open the door.........that means they are liable and you can sue for many things from depression due to the loss of a family member..........your pet is considered a family member......get a lawyer that is pro-animal and you see them be more concerned.

Sometimes by just talking to the manager can change things specially if you are on time with your payments and you don't have too much problems with disturbace, and stuff.

First thing talk to someone in the office, if it does not work talk to Home office management company for your complex, if it does not work get a lawyer, pet insurance and talk to them once more!!

Ultimatelly if that does not work, you can always move to a pet friendly complex..........you can look them up on-line!!

if you live in the usa, all leases and agreements to rent require or imply that the landlord or his agent (maintenance/management) has to be able to enter your rented unit at all times. if you were to put a new lock on the door and not give your landlord a key, then you are in violation of your contract.

why? because the person who lives upstairs from you may have left the bath tub water running and gone to sleep. then the water is going to begin to ruin your bathroom ceiling and then start to run down the walls. that's only ONE for instance. there are many valid reasons for the landlord, he who owns the building and is therefore responsible for its upkeep (it will also lose real estate value if he does not do that), to have access for any reasonable cause.

if not an emergency, rental agreements usually state that the landlord or his agent must give you notice within 24 hours of entry. read your agreement, as when you both sign it, it is a contract. if you don't live up to your contract, you may be sued.

why don't you tell your landlord your fear and put a note on your doors warning them to not let the dog out? else, put the dog on the longest leash you can buy so that it has free access everywhere in your apartment.

why would a landlord steal a dog??? if you think that will happen, get one of those chips put under its skin, or better yet, hehehe, install one of those lo-jacks that are put inside of cars to instantly locate them if they are stolen.

You can talk to the apartment management and ask them to let you know before maintenance or anyone else enters the apartment.

You can also keep your dog confined in a bedroom or in a kennel on days you know when someone will be coming in. Most often you'll know when maintenance is supposed to be entering your apartment - either they will let you know ahead of time if it is for regular stuff; or you will have asked for some kind of work to be done.

You probably ought to consider keeping your dog kenneled while you aren't home anyway. It will prevent any chance of him running away accidentally when someone opens the door. It will also keep him from chewing anything he shouldn't chew - such as your favorite pair of shoes or that plant you just bought but didn't realize was poisonous to dogs.

I work in the property management industry. It is illegal for maintenance or manager to enter your home without giving you 24 hour written notice in advance. That way you can make arrangements to be home to watch the dog. The only time they can enter unannounced is when there is an emergency, such as a plumbing flood, fire, smelling a gas leak etc. Hope this helps.

If you think someone will come in put a camera so it faces the door and as much apartment as possible -then when you have the film take it to the police department and have that person arrested. Maintenance must have "emergency" reason to enter without 24 hour notice and maintenance must give 24 hours unless an emergency situation. So if they come in and theres no emergency you can get them arrested. Once you have done that -no one will break in again!! At least no one from the complex.

Ps if you think they might come in- crate your dog or put in room where he cant escape.

A manager or maintenance person has a RIGHT to enter your dwelling for a host of reasons. Emergencies (smoke, water, etc), and with notice, can enter for routine inspections and maintenance. If you change the locks and do not give management a copy, you are in violation of your lease and can be evicted. Don't like it? Buy your own home. It's about protection of the property, which you don't own.

The apartment manager and maintenance person have a right to enter your apartment even if you are not at home. It is usually specified in your lease. You should talk with the manager and explain the situation to them. Most would be reasonable and at least inform you before entering so you would have the opportunity to be there if you desired.

Talk to the manager or maintenance guy about who gets to use your key. Make sure there is only one extra copy and that it is only going to be used in emergencies. Ask as many questions as possible. Maybe ask if it would be ok with him if you changed you lock? or got a dead bolt for your door

Notify the landlord of this situation. They will put a note in your file to not enter while your gone. IF the dog goes missing the landlord can be help responsible. Also be sure to document-document-document.
