If your doctor told you to do that, then I would be more inclined to call the office back and ask them how much you should use. It has always been my understanding that unless a newborn's bowel movement is quite thick and sticky (consistency of peanut butter) that it is not likely the baby is constipated. Some babies can go several days between bowel movements and that is quite normal for them. Also, straining while having a bowel movement is normal. I have also always heard to use light Karo syrup. So, a call to your pediatrician's office to clarify the instructions would be appropriate. Added: It is true that at one time, it was not recommended to give babies corn syrup due to risk of botulism, however, the processing has changed and there is no danger to babies, but the recommendation to wait until after 1 year to give honey is still in place.

My pediatrician recommended it as well, although I used light corn syrup. Don't know how much of a difference it would make though, my doc didn't specify whether to use light or dark corn syrup. I think my doc told me to do a teaspoon with an ounce or two of water.

NONE!

"Botulism spores may also be found in undercooked food, corn syrup and even maple syrup. For this reason, feeding an infant any of these foods is risky as well."

Prunes or apple juice is milder to the baby's system.

Please tell me that your doctor was drunk when they gave you this advise. It is horrible. My doctor suggested one teaspoon of flax oil per day.
