I think more people have been answering about which team is most famous (i.e. well known), rather than most popular (i.e. liked). Now, I'm not saying it isn't any of the teams on the list, but I saw a stat about football you could apply to this situation.

The article I read said the Bears probably have more fans than any other NFL team. The reason was that Chicago is one of like the top 5 cities in terms of population, the top 3 in terms of most populus NFL cities, and number 1 in terms of most populous city with only 1 NFL team. You could do the same thing for MLB. Just figure out what team is in the most populus city with only 1 MLB team.

The Mets and Yankees are out, as are the Dodgers and Angels, White Sox and Cubs. Houston is next, but then again Texas, though big, does have two teams, so maybe rule out the Astros and Rangers. Philly is number 5, but again, the lowly Buccos do play on the other end of the state, and Philly is awful close to NYC. Phoenix is next, but are the DBacks really old enough to be be the most popular (i.e. fans often grow up in one city, move to get a job, but still follow their old team, of which AZ isn't going to have as many of these people). San Diego has too many other teams too close by.

Detroit is the 11th most populous city in America. The Tigers are by themselves in the city, and there aren't any other teams in the state. The Tigers are fairly old and a storied team. Although, TBH, considering that NYC has over 8 million people, and Detroit has under a million, the two NY teams probably have more fans than Detroit. Something could be said for the Jays, but then again, they are in Canada, so I have a hard time believe that are the most popular.

It's probably the Yankees.

1. New York Yankees (most championship wins out of any sports franchise ever.)
2. Boston RedSox (the Yanks rivals, best rivalry in sports, what not to like.)
3. New York Mets (New York teams are always popular in any sport and NYM has Wright, Reyes and a lot to look forward to.)
4. St. Louis Cardinals (best NL team since baseball has had the 2 leagues).
5. Los Angeles Dodgers (what made them most popular was when they were Brooklyn Dodgers and had Jackie Robinson).
6. Chicago Cubs (Wrigley Field)

And the worst team awards go to: (based on performance and attendance) Pittsburgh Pirates, Kansas City Royals, Tampa Bay Devil Rays, Washington Nationals, and with an exception, good performance but bad attendance and I hate to do this but Florida Marlins. They've always been a pretty good team, but for some reason, nobody likes them and the team has no money and will end up moving very soon.

From an AP-Ipsos poll released last October (and, unfortunately, no longer free on the web), among those polled who identified themselves as baseball fans, the Yankees were the most popular by fans, I think it was around 14%, and FAR AND AWAY the most popular among detractors ("which team do you love to hate?") with a 40% share.

It was impressive; practically every team gets some lovin', but the Yankees have a near monopoly on the hating.

So the Yankees win both ways, and potential buyers of "Yankees Suck" shirts are the biggest segment of the market.

I'd probably say the Yankees. Almost every fair weather fan I know is a Yankees fan, although some may be changing loyalties again here soon. That adds up to a lot over the country, not even adding the real fans that they have.

Right now since they are whooping the Yankees' butt, I would say that the Red Sox are the most popular team right now.

Most simple question I have ever seen. The Yankees easily are the most popular team cause of their star power and big spending not to mention their history with 26 or so world series titles. But most popular don't mean most liked.I think all non Yank fans view them as the bully on the block who try to buy the world series. The team that everyone loves to hate (unless you're a Yankee fan of course).
