On December 17, 1903 close to Kitty Hawk, North Carolina, they made the international's first flight in a powered, heavier-than-air gadget. With Orville on the controls, the airplane flew a hundred and twenty ft (37 meters) in 12 seconds. The brothers made 3 extra flights that day. The longest, by utilising Wilbur, became into 852 ft (260 meters) in fifty 9 seconds.

They worked on the airplane as did dozens of other people. The inventions critical to making their airplane work when others did not was the wing warping, rudders, and elevators that gave them control, the improved shape for the propellors and the relatively light weight of the engine they built. Most critical of all was their careful testing of wing designs, including discovering that published data was mostly nonsense. While they provided the core of aircraft design, of the features they included several went in other directions shortly after their craft, including wing warping changing to ailerons and the rudder and elevators moving to the rear of the plane like an arrow instead of being split front and rear.

They were the first to successfully fly an airplane. And in the process they also built their own wind tunnel to test wing designs. I'm not sure if it was the first, but it was a novel approach at the time.
The Wright brothers were the first to create an effective control system for an aircraft allowing them to complete their flight without crashing.
