Wire brush and carb cleaner or yes a tooth brush and Liquid Wrench work well. Gasoline is a little explosive to clean parts with and it will dissolve a tooth brush.
Stay away from sandpaper and steel wool, they can leave bits of grit or metal on the plug that will make your engine sad.
And yes, check your gap!

if it is that baaaaad, then go to wal-mart and get a new one for this season. Otherwise, soak in gasoline and use a wire brush. Then I use a little fine grit sand paper on the point. But you can buy a new plug for the price of a new brush and sand paper.

you would be genuinely positive with turning mower on factor without removing plug cord. it won't by possibility start up on you. have you ever seen a lawnmower spontaneously start up without pullng the twine? I havent the two. I clean mine after each time I decrease and characteristic in no way had a roblem in over 2 many years of this custom. the only conceivable possibility you could incur is in all possibility slicing hand on blade, yet you would be positive.

Easiest would be to just replace the plug as they are really cheap. But a soak in WD40 and maybe some steel wool would do the trick.

Soak it in Coca-cola (yes, the soda). My father's been a truckdriver for over 30 years and that's what he uses to clean rust and gunk off the truck engine. And the scary part is that it REALLY does work.
