First thing I'd check is the bulbs, not uncommon for both bulbs to burn out at about the same time, next would be the turn signal switch, the brake lights go through it.

I'm thinking they fixed the problem with the light housings from 88 to 96. As others stated here check the bulbs first. Not that they went out at the same time but one may have been out for a while and you never noticed it. If you have good bulbs and they still don't shine work your way up to the column looking for broken or disconnected wires/connectors (probably not a ground because something would shine, just not properly) If it is the switch (small percentage that it is) the column needs to be disassembled to replace.

The wiring from the brake gentle change is routed up the guidance, through the turn signal change and back down the guidance column although to the lights fixtures. there's a plug on the decrease end of the guidance column which the wires run through. verify to work out if the plug is made or if any wires were pulled out. If both brake and turn signal lights fixtures at the instantaneous are not operating and fuses are sturdy then there is maximum in all possibility a difficulty someplace in that wiring or likely interior the turn signal change.

I had a 88 silverado and the problem I had with the taillights was that the housing itself was bad, you might want to check that, good luck

Crawl under the back and trace the black wire to the lights. see if it is broken or loose somewhere. Sounds like a ground problem.
