In Collage John Olerud was hit by a line drive in the side of the head so hard that he was out of the lineup for quite a while, ever since he has worn his helmet on the defensive side of the field as well as, when he bats.

When he was younger he got hit in the head while playing defense. He was given the choice to never play baseball again, or wear a helmet throughout the game.

Olerud indeed had an aneurysm in his late teens. To minimize the risk of aggravating his condition, he began wearing the batting helmet while playing defense to protect his head from an errant line drive or wild throw. Doctors long ago cleared him to play without the defensive helmet, but Olerud had gotten so accustomed to wearing it that he continued to do so.

When he was a young, in the minors or in college, he had a brain tumor that nearly killed him. The batting helmet protects his head which is more vulnerable than most other players due to having been operated on.

He had a brain aneurysm his senior year at Washington State. Which is the widening of a blood vessel that balloons out. Because of the risk of it bursting and causing Olerud to die from a severe hematoma of the brain, he continues to wear it for safety.
