I have been trying to get pregnant for 8 months. I am bulimic. My doctor did say it could take up to 12 months for me to return to normal after having my implant out. I thought bulimia could only affect fertility if you were so skinny your periods stopped. I'm not skinny, size 12-14, and my periods have been regular since my implant was removed. Could the bulimia still affect me in this way even though Im a normal size and have regular periods. I binge/purge 2-5 times a day depending on how busy I am with other things. PLease don't say go to my doctor, they won't do tests until i've had my implant out for a year.

If you aren't healthy yourself, what makes you think you are ready to have a baby? Get this disease under control FIRST, please, before you try to get pregnant.

Can Bulimia Affect Fertility

2017-01-20 05:12:19 · answer #2 · answered by flanary 4 · 0 0

The most important thing you can do while you're trying to conceive and while you're pregnant is eat right. There's not a whole lot else you can do. If you're bingeing and purging that many times a day, you don't have any control over the disease. I agree with previous poster, if you can't handle your own life, how can you handle having a child. And yes, bulimia will definitely affect you. You may not realize it, but your body is in some amount of shock and doesn't have proper nutrients. If you do conceive, you could put that baby in danger because you're not injesting the right amount of healthy foods. The other risk is that you will get less and less and less of the nutrients as your body will take all it can get for the baby and leave you with weak bones and a bad immune system. I know you don't want to hear that you need to see a doctor, but you need to see a doctor about the bulimia specifically - not about getting a fertility test. Take time to deal with your bulimia, and then try getting pregnant when you're confident you have that in control.

Yes it will.

You are not getting the nutrients you need to get pregnant and sustain a pregnancy and the stress of the bulimia and the underlying causes for it are also contributing factors.

I will still say to go to your doctor, not to have your fertility checked out, but to get help with the bulimia, you are really doing yourself some damage and even if you get pregnant your baby will need the food.

I know that it is really hard to do something about an eating disorder, sometimes it seems like the only thing in the world you can control, but if you want to be a mother you need to get yourself sorted out. Good luck.

Yes, it could well be affecting your fertility. The amount you are binging and purging means that you will not be absorbing anywhere near the amount of vitamins and minerals you need. If you are low on certain vitamins and minerals, then you will not be able to conceive.
Do you take a daily multivitamin? You should do this at a time when you don't usually binge to give it a few hours to be absorbed.
However, you need to think about how your bulimia is going to be when you are pregnant. Do you think you will be able to control it? Because if you can't, you will be putting your baby at serious risk.

Yes, it absolutely CAN affect your fertility. Your body will not be fertile when it is under so much stress. You have to stop doing that to yourself. Besides, would you want your child to see that? Get yourself some help and find out the root of the bulimia, and your body will be in better shape to reproduce.

Besides, if you did get pregnant, you could really hurt the baby if you don't stop this. And it is a very difficult problem to quit. That's like smoking while trying to conceive, and then say, oh I'll quit when the stick turns blue. You have to make your body healthy for reproduction.

it could well affect you fertility, i hate the thought that I'm going to say this but should you be trying for a baby while you have such a serious problem, you must surely know that you are damaging your health and i understand you cant help it you have a disease but can you stop binge/purging when you are pregnant because that could well put your babies health at risk. you may well get morning sickness and on top of that make yourself vomit on purpose, you could end up dehydrated and may lose the baby you've been wanting for so long. also your mental state has a lot to do with fertility you may well not get pregnant while suffering from this illness as your body will want to protect itself from any further damage. i don't mean to imply that you should not have a baby but i think you should try and deal with this one issue first and then consider a family.

You are still binging and purging!!! You need to be HEALTHY to get pregnant and if you are not caring for your body the way you should be by giving it all the vitamins, protein, etc. that you need you will not get pregnant. And if you can't control the binging/purging now how are you going to control it when you have the added stress of being pregnant? Does your doctor know you are still binging/purging or are you no longer seeing the doctor because your implant is out and you are a "normal" size and your period has come back?

Get yourself under control and stop binging/purging. Start eating a healthy diet filled with fruits, vegetables and protein. Start taking a pre-natal vitamin and GROW UP! You are obviously too immature to have a child if you can't control the bulimia that WILL KILL YOU and leave your child an orphan.

Yes - it is very possible that even if you're not incredibly skinny that you could still be affecting our fertility by having poor nurtrition due to bulimia - and more importantly if you are trying to conceive you need to try and get your eating disorder under control first - you can't continue to binge and purge while pregnant - and you have to ask yourself if your self-esteem is so low that you are doing this to yourself, then is weight gain from pregnancy going to effect you? It doesn;t sound like you are in a good position to be trying to have a child - you clearly have other issues to deal with first. Good Luck.

I'm guessing ur doctor doesn't know about ur bulimia cause he wouldn't recommend getting pregnant if he did. ur bulimia probably is stopping u from getting pregnant, but if u do get pregnant there is a high possibility u would miscarry from all the puking and lack of nutrients getting to ur baby and if ur lucky enough not to miscarry in early pregnancy there are lots of cases of rupturing the placenta from force of all the puking in bulimic girls. I'd strongly recommend u get ur bulimia sorted before u even consider getting pregnant if not for ur sake then for the sake of the little life you'll be risking before it's even born.

Yes bulimia affects fertility. A woman's sex hormones are stored in her fatty tissues, and you probably don't have enough because you are still fighting this disorder.

You need to get it under control before trying to conceive (if that's even possible). Not only is your body not going to sustain a pregnancy well (babies need LOTS of food) but bulimia has other psychological symptoms that will make pregnancy difficult (body image, etc.).

Please wait until you are healthier in body and mind before you have a baby.

My prayers are with you.
