Because they existed longer than the American League . The National League started in 1876 and American League started in 1901.

Because it's older. The N.L. came into being in 1876, while the American League only became a major league in 1901 (though it is descended from an older minor league).

The National League is an older league. The American League came from the American Association, & they merged in the late 1800's. Not sure of the exact year, but that is the reason why.
