A pair of Pearl gourami (T. leeri) would be nice I think.

When I read your question, I was going to suggest a dwarf gourami. Since you're not into those, how about an African butterfly fish or an oddball catfish?
You can take a look at the suggestions for tankmates in this link: http://www.elmersaquarium.com/h701elmers_freshwater_handbook.htm - swords are compatible with communities 2-5. You'll see some of the species listed will eventually be too big for a 40 gallon (and this is probably more upright than long), or would be best kept in schools, so avoid those!

You 'might' get away witha Electric Blue Jack Dempsey.

40 gallons is considered the bare minimum for them, but with proper filtration and water change frequency, I have known people to pull it off ... although I don't know much about your swordtails ... so if they remain very small ... they may co-exist if the JD is small and grows up with them ... otherwise they may become a meal.
Some other smaller cichlid may be good. They are quite personable.
I am not really big into most of the common fish ... a single male betta could work if he ignores the tails on the other fish, and the other fish aren't fin nippers. Male bettas don't like other bettas or other 'flowing finned' fish, but get along with most others. You could add several female bettas, most of them get along quite well.
It sounds like you are wanting something big. My best suggestion is to go to some fish stores and see what appeals to you and come back to the internet and study, especially at forums to find out what they require and personal experiences. You could also browse forums at the picture sections and look as well.
Ultimately the decision lies with you and your tastes. Hope you can find what you are looking for!!!

what number fish are already contained in the tank? a 10 gall can carry about 4 similar sex guppies and a sparkling gourami or a lady betta, not a male betta with the guppies. or 2 african dwarf frogs

Angelfish would compliment this tank as they like a tall aquarium. this link gives you some idea of what other fish may be good tank mates too!
