depends on what you are hooking up. for the most part HD signals are passed over component cables. they are capable of displaying 480i, 480p, 720p and 1080i. an HDMI cable can also be used- the advantage with an HDMI cable is that it is capable of carrying audio as well. with component cables you will need to also run some audio cables (stereo RCA cables or a digital audio cable).

HDMI will also carry 1080p when it becomes readily available (not all versions of HDMI, check the labels)
