Well, since you guys are strapped for cash, I would suggest maybe a savings bond, or maybe open him up a savings account or something...
or just a gift card...

A Ipod, Money, A gift certificate to his favorite store, A Tv, A hope chest filled with items to use when he finally moves out, And a car would be nice.
