this is one of the easiest things to do just take off recoil shroud usually 3 or 4 bolts.next take out the rest of broken cord next wind the pulley counterclockwise you should feel spring getting tight keep winding until stop then back pulley one revoulution until line hole on shroud with pulley hole put screwdriver through pulley hole so it won't unwind next take new rope with handle already installed and put end of rope through both holes and tie overhand knot rope should be 5 to 7 foot hold rope and slowly take out screwdriver while holding rope let it slowly wind back in now you are a small engine mechanic .good luck

If you are like me and don't have the money to get other people to fix your stuff we have to learn to repair things ourselves. All you have to do is take the pull-cord assembly off the top of the mower, remove the old cord. The spring assembly will be not be tight at this time so you will need to twist the inner coil until it is tight. Take your new cord and insert it....basically just like the old one. Make sure and tie a knot on the end of the new cord. Gently release the pressure on the coil and it will pull the cord into the assembly. Reattach the spring assembly on the mower and it should be good to go.

You likely won't need that ratchet that the cord attaches to and wraps around, but a new cord is a good idea. If you haven't had the mower in for a tuneup you should do it now, early in the spring before things get crazy. For around $50 they will replace the cord and tune up the whole machine. Which would have been the same amount you would have spent on the ratchet and cord.
Sometimes it's just easier AND cheaper to let a pro do it.

All you really need is the new cord. You do have to take the top of the engine apart to get to the spring. If you dont feel comfortable doing it, then take it to a small engine repair place. It would be cheaper to try and do it yourself first though. Good luck.
