It's as safe as you want to make it.
Normally all transactional and personal details are encrypted AND banks would hardly wish to have a mass panic because their online banking site is unsafe.
BUT if you want to start giving out passwords etc over any unsafe (ie not https) sites, are easily conned by fraudulent websites and like sending passwords by unsecured mails, then I guess it's not for you and the tin box under the bed option suddenly seems attractive.
Be sensible it's fine

When you go to your banks web site. Look at the bottom of the screen. If you see a lock there scroll over it. If it says SSL Secured (128) that means there is 128 bit encryption on it and would make it very safe on the banks end. The only problems I have heard of is your computers firewall, spam and virus protectors were either not up to old or non-existent.

Online Banking is the way to go. Saves you time and provides you money at a faster pace (if you do any kind of money transfers etc, its very useful). Its safe too. All the websites use 128 bit encryption normally and its very tough to crack that.

I've banked online for a good few years without any problem and it's really convenient to be able to check your balance, pay bills, transfer money etc.
My bank also does this special online savings account that doesn't have paper statements and no cashcard for drawing on it and, in return, you get a phenomenal interest rate.

I have been using an online account about 4 years, no problems so far.
Some large Banks have extra security, give you a small device to create new passwords, for example every time you sign-in online etc.

Yeah.. i think its safe.. been doing it for years and have purchased online. I stick to a certain group of online companies. You can get information about how to keep your details etc safe, but i couldnt tell you where you'd get that info from. Maybe some other answerers might have that info.
